UPTA has constituted the National Federation of Street Traders in Madrid, aiming to dignify and professionalise their activities.

Madrid In 2007, the year with the latest official statistics, there were a total of 181,567 market stalls, identifying, in communities higher than 300 residents, up to 2,854 markets that gave work to more than 150,000 people in Spain. Street trading is between 4 and 7% of the total retail trade in Spain.

In order to continue this activity, UPTA(Union of professional and Independent Workers) has formed the National Federation of street traders, in Madrid, mainly composed by the most representative associations of almost all the Autonomous Communities formed by self-employed workers. "The purpose of this Federation will be to fight and protect the interests of these business professionals and the dignity of the profession itself", assures the General –Secretary of UPTA Spain, Sebastián Reyna.

Lack of response from EThekwini Municipality regarding requests for better service delivery and working conditions for Informal traders

On June 26, over a thousand informal traders marched to protest against Ethekwini municipality for better service delivery and working conditions for informal traders. Ubumbano Traders Alliance delivered a memorandum to the Mayors Office on behalf of the informal traders.

Ubumbano and Phillip Sithole from the Business Unit agreed to have a meeting.This has not yet happened. While waiting for responses to the memorandum, officials were instructed two days later (28 June), to close down the stalls of street traders who owed rent money. Officials were also instructed to close down the storerooms.

Municipal Corporation agrees to form committee of municipal authorities and street vendor leaders for regular interaction, initiate pilot projects in five areas marking yellow lines and digitalised survey of vendors before formation of TVC and Vending Zones

Anguished and enraged over the non-implementation of the 2004 National Policy for Street Vendors in Ludhiana and the continuing harassment and eviction of street vendors, the National Association of Street Vendors of India {NASVI) and its affiliate Ludhiana Rehri Fadi Federation on Monday launched agitation demanding early formation of Town Vending Committee (TVC) with forty per cent representation of street vendor representatives and for creation of 75 Vending Zones across four municipal zones of the city. Approximately a thousand vendors joined a huge Aakrosh Sabha at the Guru Nanak Dev Bhawan in the city in which they slammed the municipal corporation for showing scant regard to the provisions of the National Policy which mandate protection of livelihood of vendors through forming the TVC and creating Vending Zones as well as several judicial pronouncements of the Supreme Court in favour of street vendors.

Informal traders march to protest against EThekwini Municipality for better service delivery

This Wednesday, June 26, a thousand two hundred informal traders marched to protest against Ethekwini municipality for better service delivery.

The march started from the Botanical Gardens and then proceeded to the City Hall, where a memorandum was given to the office of the Mayor. The march was supported by Ubumbano Traders Alliance (Ubumbano) and StreetNet (to which Ubumbano is affiliated). StreetNet is a worker organisation that broadens, networks and represents their members through national and international structures.

StreetNet International is an alliance of street vendors. It was launched in Durban, South Africa, in November 2002.

Membership-based organizations (unions, co-operatives or associations) directly organizing street vendors, market vendors and/or hawkers among their members, are entitled to affiliate to StreetNet International.

The aim of StreetNet is to promote the exchange of information and ideas on critical issues facing street vendors, market vendors and hawkers (i.e. mobile vendors) and on practical organizing and advocacy strategies
