Letter from Korea: Street vendors hold 15th annual rally A Resolution by StreetNet at the first Asian meeting requesting that no street vendors be evicted without consultation during the World CUP was sent to the FIFA organisers and the Mayor of Seoul. NFSVK reported that the resolution had helped as there had been no evictions of street vendors. Here NFSVK writes about plans for its annual rally Dear Mrs Pat Horn, The Korean government tends to withdraw any permission to hold mass rallies during the 2002 FIFA World Cup Games. Therefore, we presume that our rally planned on June 19 could be prohibited as well. But we’ve decided to push ahead the rally as we planned. Since it is our annual event that has been observed for 15 years, we don’t see any reason to stop the practice only for the international event. With the Press conference on June 11, we are going to start various events of street vendors that will go through until the 19th when we are going to have a mass rally to declare ‘Street Vendors’ resolution for struggle’. The purpose of our event is to commemorate the historical rally of June 13, 1988, which led to the building of the national street vendors’ organization, NFSVK. The rally was against the Chun Du-hwan former military dictatorship’s attempt to remove street vendors for the 1988 Seoul games. This year, on June 12, street vendors are going to have friendly soccer games along with dismissed workers, removed villagers (people living on low incomes, and living in villages marked for redevelopment are being expelled from their homes) and we are also planning to have many cultural events on the streets between June 13-19. With best regards Kim Hueng-Hyun, Chairperson, NFSVK (National Federation of Street Vendors of Korea) |
