Kenya: Resettlement plan stalled By NAHA Earlier this year the government decided to eliminate street vending in all the major towns while it claimed it was upgrading them. In the process, goods worth millions of K/shillings were destroyed. The Nairobi Hawkers Alliance (NAHA) demonstrated their opposition to the local authorities and following our protests they stopped the destruction of street traders goods and stalls. The Government undertook to resettle street vendors that had been evicted. The 2002/3 budget which was read in Parliament on June 2002, made an allocation to the informal sector for this purpose. While we are preparing for elections later in the year, we are also asking why the promises made by the local government and planning authorities have not been met and to get an answer from the Nairobi City Mayor on why the resettlement of vendors has been stalled. |
