StreetNet and its affiliates, as workers in the informal
economy, note the importance of the global call
by
UNAIDS for
“universal access and human rights” in 2009. "Universal Access and human rights"
The
theme has been chosen to address the critical need to protect human
rights and attain access for all to HIV prevention, treatment, care and
support. It also acts as a call to countries to remove laws that
discriminate against people living with HIV, women and marginalized
groups. Countries are also urged to realise the many commitments they
made to protect human rights in the Declaration of Commitment on
HIV/AIDS (2001) and the Political Declaration on HIV/AIDS (2006).
(UNAIDS statement, 2009)
Street and market traders share the responsibility with governments,
AIDS organisations and civil society, to educate and to raise awareness
on HIV/AIDS Prevention and Treatment and Care.
StreetNet affiliates Three StreetNet affiliates this year, ASSOTSI, Mozambique, MUFIS, Malawi, and LDFC, DR-Congo, report that they have held workshops taking the message on HIV/AIDS prevention to their members in the different regions of their countries and in DR-Congo, to their members in the capital Kinshasa. In the case of Malawi, MUFIS reports that participants said that it was the first time that people had a chance to discuss HIV/AIDS in their organisation. SEWA, India, another StreetNet affiliate, provides health care for its members who are women workers in the informal economy as well as health education for its members. Spread the message of HIV/AIDS prevention as widely as possible
Street and market vendors work in the public market places and they have
built partnerships with health organisations and local government
to provide services, for both
informal traders and their customers, for
HIV/AIDS testing, AIDS prevention
programmes and for treatment and
care. An example is the work done by the organisation MAVAP in Kampala markets in Uganda.

Stop
the stigma Global AIDS DAY makes us question the stigma that millions of people living with HIV/AIDS in the world today face because of ignorance. Watch International Red Cross video about a taxi driver in El Salvador in Latin America who educates passengers about AIDS prejudice to spread understanding. StreetNet encourages affiliates to send reports on AIDS projects. We will publish the report on the website. On World AIDS Day 2009, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is launching a new advocacy report called “Inequalities fuelling HIV pandemic” focusing on Red Cross societies’ response in Latin America and the Caribbean. It insists on the necessity to support the most vulnerable groups to reduce HIV infection. http://www.ifrc.org World AIDS Day materials: http://www.worldaidscampaign.org/en/World-AIDS-Day-Materials UNAIDS Progress Reports submitted by countries
