CNTG: Report June to 30 July, 2008
The Coordinator of CNTG has conducted awareness raising on the ground, such as at the following markets: ENTA, Madina, Boussoura, Tanènè and Matoto on public health - cholera and typhoid fever. In our country, every rainy season brings epidemics of the diseases; and due to lack of hygiene, street vendors and children shoe polishers are the first victims. That is why this year CNTG has taken up that challenge.
CNTG cordinator and the informal economy women members have also actively participated in the celebration of the National Guinean Women’s day on 27th August 2008, a historic day when of women Madina market vendors revolted against harassment, humiliation and bullying by the then economic police. This was in 1977 - this revolt was brutally repressed, many women lost their lives while others were jailed in camp Boiro.
Every year, 27th August is celebrated under a different specific theme to honour the brave heroines. This year, the national day of Guinean women, was an advocacy day for women’s fundamental rights, respect of a quota for women's representation in decision making positions. Conferences and debates in the national languages were organised in every province and commune. The Minister in charge of women empowerment and childhood held field visits in workshops of soap makers, and dyers, and with fish wholesalers and women sweepers.
